Le Pont de l'Ouysse (Hotel-Restaurant)

I've long said that I don't feel as though I've arrived in France until I sit down for my first lunch; there's something about lunch, its comparative lack of formality, its atmosphere of relaxation and anticipation that blends into a mélange of pleasure and delight.

Now, for me, that lunch can be anywhere, so long as it comes with a bit of shade, an agreeable temperature, a glass (or three) of something moderately tipsy and food, whether basic or complex, that is well prepared by someone of passion slaving away in a kitchen.

When I arrived at Le Pont de l'Ouysse restaurant (not that all the bridge is there these days), I knew, long before we sat down, that this was going to be a special place. But first, in the company of proprietors, Daniel and Stéphane Chambon, we were taken off to inspect the nearby truffle orchard, not that they actually revealed any truffles to us, of course.

A la table things evolved with at a leisurely pace, heavy with expectation. We were not to be disappointed. Carpaccio of duck with white truffle sauce got us under way, and what followed was exactly what you'd expect of a Michelin-starred restaurant...but I'm not going to tell you; go find for yourself, you won't be disappointed. The passion I demand from those in the kitchen was truly evident on the plate, almost as if each dish had been blessed...they had certainly been prepared with reverence.

To make this beautiful place even more endearing, it is also a small hotel; so, you can eat, enjoy, quaff...and sleep it off...until dinner. Bon appétit.
